The summer of 2009 is reputed to be the “summer that never was”. The weather in Northeast Pennsylvania has been far from ideal. On July 24th, 2009 the day began like most this year. cloudy with a threat of showers. The showers arrived as the volunteers for the Vocational Department Golf Tournament arrived at Sand Springs Country Club to set up for their 4th annual event. A mist turned to rain and things did not seem promising but the show must go on. Set up took a little over an hour and by the time the first golf teams arrived to register, the weather had taken a turn. It was to be a fine day after all.

This year we hosted 82 golfers and 18 volunteers who enjoyed this beautiful day on the golf course. Each golfer received a Step By Step party cooler as a participation prize. Our grand hole-in-one prize, sponsored by Howell Benefits, was a $10,000.00 golf vacation in Hawaii. Other hole-in-one prizes were a set of Callaway Big Bertha golf clubs, a Sony flat panel television and round trip airfare for two anywhere in the continental United States.

Gift baskets donated by agency departments and friends of the Vocational Department were, as usual, a favorite of everyone in attendance. The beautiful and creative baskets add that special touch that make our tournament unique. Thanks again to everyone who donated.

The Vocational Department would like to thank everyone who helped to make our day a success. Our efforts were greatly rewarded by the generosity of the donations we received, both monetary and in-kind. We are pleased to announce that this year, in addition to Howell Benefits as our Tournament Sponsor, we once again welcomed back PNC Bank as a Title Sponsor. Our Corporate Banner sponsors were: Brewers Outlet, BMC Desk and 1st Liberty Bank and Trust. This year we will continue to use the funds raised to increase community awareness as to the benefits of hiring people with disabilities.
